What was your goal when you originally signed up?
I was a chubby kid growing up. As I hit my late teen growth spurt, I thinned out a little bit, but I always struggled to stay motivated to work and get in shape. I’ve always been carefree with my diet and my weight started fluctuating after college. After moving to Savannah, starting a new career, and taking on a fulfilling, but stressful job, I noticed the weight gain in the way my clothes fit or stopped fitting. By the beginning of 2018, I reached my heaviest recorded weight, about 255 lbs. So my goal when I signed up for CrossFit was to shed weight, get stronger, and feel healthier.
How did you originally hear about us?
I heard about CrossFit SteadFast from the Savannah Derby Devils and the now-defunct Savannah Men’s Roller Derby. My wife Kelly has been a member of SDD for a few years and many of her teammates used CrossFit as a way of training off-skates. They recommended it to me after I stopped skating and was looking for both a social and athletic outlet.
What prompted you to seek us out?
I was always intimidated by the idea of doing CrossFit. The intensity and group atmosphere brought up my insecurities formed by years of dealing with mean jocks in middle school and high school. But at some point — after ripping a favorite pair of dress pants and tipping the scales one too many times — my anxiety about the status quo overcame my anxiety and fear about fitness. So I decided last January that I would try CrossFit after an upcoming work trip. My first free drop-in class was in January 2018 and I did my fundamentals training (on-ramp) in mid-February.
How do you feel about your future?
I feel so much more optimistic now than I did a year ago. I love CrossFit and I love the community at SteadFast. I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life. I have done so many things that I thought I couldn’t do. With the encouragement and help of the coaches and fellow athletes, I have broken through so many mental and physical barriers. I know I can do a lot more than I ever thought was possible, and I’m excited for how I’ll continue to grow and improve.
What have you liked best about working with us?
SteadFast is a really supportive and caring community. We strike the perfect balance between motivating, correcting, teaching, and encouraging. I used to associate team workouts with shame and belittling, but now I know that we can be intense with each other, have high expectations, but still meet everyone where they are and build them up. As a pastor, SteadFast has actually taught me a lot of lessons about loving community that I personally needed and the Church as a whole can learn from.
What would you say to anyone else who might be interested in starting at SteadFast?
I can’t recommend Steadfast highly enough. CrossFit and the SteadFast community have changed my life and I’m hooked. I’m so grateful for the work they do and I know everyone can benefit from it if they put their mind to it.
